September 18, 2026New US Public Charge Rule Takes Effect September 18, 2026A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) final rule that rescinds the 2022 public charge regulation took effect on September 18, 2026. USCIS officers now decide whether a green card applicant is likely to become a "public charge" through a broader, case-by-case review of the totality of the applicant's circumstances. The rule applies to adjustment of status applications postmarked or filed online on or after September 18, 2026, which must use the revised Form I-485.September 18, 2026H-1B $100,000 Fee Extended to 2027 but Still Blocked by CourtsOn September 18, 2026 the President signed a proclamation extending the $100,000 payment requirement for certain new H-1B petitions by 12 months, to September 21, 2027. The fee is still not being collected, because a federal court vacated the policy on June 8, 2026 and the First Circuit refused on July 24, 2026 to put that ruling on hold during the appeal. A separate executive order directs agencies to consider an employer's past and planned layoffs when reviewing H-1B filings.September 16, 2026Express Entry September 2026 Draws: Healthcare, Physicians, CEC and Senior ManagersBetween August 31 and September 16, 2026, IRCC held seven Express Entry draws that together issued 9,117 invitations to apply (ITAs) for permanent residence.
